Week 9 Story: The meaning of a long journey

Long times ago, a human's spirit had been separated by a witch into two parts. Half is a brave soul, another one is a coward soul. He asked the witch to move the brave soul into his body and keep his coward soul in a box.

In this era, people were suffering from rampant monsters. He decided to kill every monster and bring peace to humans. Since the part of his soul which represents the coward had been eliminated by the witch, he had no fear when he faces any of the monsters.

When his sword was cut out, his cloak was dyed red by monsters' blood, tranquility returns to the human's society. People eulogized him and thanked him for his bravery.

However, one day, someone told him, "There is a temple in the mountains, a monster transferred itself into a monk. It eats every people who stay in the temple." He had no hesitated and went to that temple.

In the temple, he saw that monk and said, "Do not struggle, and I will kill you in one second". But, the monk turned into the witch who once helped him. It smiled and said, "Look at you, such a brave hero." Then, the monster took out that little box, put the coward soul into the owner's body. He returned to a normal person and began to feel scary.

At last, the monster killed him.

The Authors Notes: The original story is from Japanese Fairy Tales by Yei Theodora Ozaki (1908). I choose one part of the original story and rewrite that. In the original version, warriors always could defeat monsters and gain success. In this rewriting story, I try to put some changes to the classic plots. Please enjoy reading it.

  1. Hey Taiwei, first off I definitely enjoyed the choice in story! It's always fun to read about warriors and their adventures! That said, I like that you changed the ending where the monsters get to win, and I found it extremely fitting that he lost to the witch that allowed him to only have a brave soul. Maybe they thought that this warrior was going to kill them since he was going after all the monsters, and as a result they gave him back his cowardice to prevent that. Overall, it was a really good read!

  2. Hi Taiwei! I really loved this story! I think it's wonderful that you changed it to give it a more realistic ending. It is a stretch that the good guys always win, so I appreciate that you gave us a chance to see that that isn't always true! I also wanted to say that I love the image you chose for the story! It provides such a good contrast with the ultimate ending, which I always find enjoyable.
