Taiwei Chang's Introduction

Taiwei Chang's Introduction

I am a transfer student from China, and I always believe that go to study abroad is the best choice that I have ever made in my life. For now, I am an economics student, and this is the second year that I came to OU. In my opinion, there are lots of cool things in my major. For example, we need to learn the regularity of economic phenomena, the role of the government, businessman and citizens, and how to fix economic problems in our society.

I would also like to show you some of my favorite things. In terms of food, it is highly suggested that the Hot Pot in China. I am sure many foreigners who also indulge in Hot Pot. Then, I would like to recommend to you my favorite movie which is called Flipped. The movie tells a beautiful story between two young people. In the beginning, they dislike each other, and there are some contradictions between them. However, a good soul would always attract the other one.

For me, pets are always important since they could bring happiness to you. There are three Exotic Shorthairs in my Chinese home. They are really smart and clever. After training, they even could understand some little orders.

Now, it is time to talk about my life goal and the importance of study abroad for me. Actually, I had not think about any short or long term goals before I went to college. When I was in middle school and high school, I even do not know why I need to keep studying those boring knowledge. The reason for this sad situation is because I always follow my parents' plan and expectation, thus, I do not have an effective motivation. However, things got changed when I went to my Chinese college (Cause I do not have a good grade in high school, my Chinese college is really not good).

When I began to think about the meaning of my life and the value of myself. I found my Chinese college could not teach me or give me the answer in order to solve those questions anymore. So, I decided to study TOFEL by myself and find an American college in order to achieve the answer about what I just said. After a hardworking for about one year and a half, I came to the OU and I got some good grades in this college. Besides, I think I find the answer about the meaning of my life and the value of myself when I live here. Recently, I just got my GRE grade, and I decided to finish my graduate courses in American. Hopefully, my journey could keep continuing, and I am ready.

  1. It is always so exciting when there are international students in these classes, Taiwei! (Or Terry!) That means we will get to learn a lot from your experience with mythology and legends that you grew up hearing and thinking about, stories that maybe are totally familiar to you but which will be new to the rest of us in the class.
And a big YES to Hot Pot! I used to live in San Francisco, and I still miss all the wonderful Chinese food I could eat there; I have never lived anywhere else that had Chinese food like in San Francisco. My favorite is Ma-Po Tofu. Extra spicy.
And I am so glad you are happy with your education adventure in America so far and with more good education adventures ahead. You can use this class as a way to practice storytelling in English, and storytelling is useful is all kinds of disciplines, including economics!

  2. Hi! I think it is oh so cool that you are an international student and that you've been at OU for two years! I've wanted to study abroad for forever, and was supposed to in Italy this summer, but covid messed those plans up :) Hopefully I can do it some other time! I'm glad you love your pets - I have 3 sweet pups at home and miss them so much!

  3. Hi, Taiwei! I think it's so cool that you took your life and education into your own hands like that. Moving so far away from home could not have been an easy decision. I hope that you continue to find the answers that you seek here in America and at OU. You're clearly someone who knows what they want and works hard to get it.

  5. Hey Tawei! I find it so admirable that you are studying abroad all on your own! That definitely takes hard work and commitment, so be proud of how far you've come and how much farther you'll go. I am also interested in studying abroad so knowing that you have had such a good experience with it makes me really encouraged!

  6. Hi Taiwei :)
I think it's really cool that you're an international student AND an economics major. I remember I poked around an economics minor, and oh boy that wasn't for me, but I think it's really admirable that the stuff clicks for you! Although I've heard people rave about hot pots, I've never actually tried them before, and now I want to try one even more. I really like movies, so I'm definitely putting Flipped on my list. I can't wait to watch it! I've always wondered what it was like to study abroad, and I think it's just amazing you gathered up the courage to actually do it. (Your dogs also sound super cute.)

  7. Hi Taiwei,

I really respect the fact that you were so brave to come and study in America! I couldn't imagine leaving America to study oversees, so I really respect that. I am glad you like it enough to stay and pursue graduate school here, as well!

I also really respect that you are an economics major, because I never understood economics! I have a big appreciation for business majors because my mind definitely is not geared towards that.

I am looking forward to getting to know you better this semester!

I had hot pot once and I loved it! I want to try it again sometime but I don't know where in Oklahoma to find it. Also, I think I've read the book Flipped. I didn't see the movie yet, but it's one of my favorite books. It's a very heartwarming story!

I wish you the best of luck with college this semester! It sounds like you have a lot of great things coming up for you. You'll have a great journey:)

  13. Hey, Taiwei!

Wow just looking at the pictures and your descriptions of the food made me really hungry, and I really hope to try some food like that in the future! I have loved cultural foods - that is - food from outside of America, and I personally love my parents' homecooking, from Pakistan! I am really missing it now. It must have been very daunting to be coming in as a transfer student, but I feel like you have really built the confidence now to be who you really are, and it shows! I am sure you'll do amazing in your writing throughout the semester. It was great to meet you!

  16. Hey Taiwei!

Thank you for sharing a little bit more about you! Are you enjoying your study abroad program here at OU? How is life different here than it is from your home in Asia? I have always wanted to go there to try all the food and see the great sights. I love how you have a dog too! I want a dog so bad, but right now I have a cat and he is pretty great too! 18. Hi Terry,

It was so great to learn a little bit about you! I can relate regarding education, college, and life plans...I also come from an Asian family with plans and expectations. But I’m glad to hear you found a passion and some values here at OU! Also, I hope you post pictures or videos of your cats! I love cats and have one myself, but, unfortunately, he is not trained, ha ha. Anyway, you seem like a great person and best of luck on your journey!

  19. Hey Taiwei, I have lots of respect for you since it absolutely has to be daunting to leave home, but especially leaving home to go to college and deal with all that business! You're definitely more courageous than me because I don't think I could leave too far from my family's side before needing them. Also, I hope that you've figured out what you would like to do with your life since familial expectations can really keep one from doing things that they're passionate about. With that said, I hope you have a good semester and hope your classes are going good!

  20. Hi Taiwei! I'm also an economics major!! What's been your favorite class so far? I really enjoyed economics of discrimination with Dr. Chunbei Wang, but I also took econometrics with Dr. Ransom and loved it - he's such a nice professor!
I love your suggestion about Chinese hotpot - I just tried it for the first time! One of my friends introduced me and a couple other people to it and prepared it the way her family does. It was both so delicious and an enjoyable way to actually have to sit and talk with each other and enjoy being together while the food all cooked.

  21. Hi Taiwei! I am South Asian, and I can completely understand the feeling of having to go with your parents expectations. I am glad that you were able to find something that you enjoyed and were able to come to America. I think that is super courageous and brave. I love hot pot. I wonder if you have had good hot pot since coming to Oklahoma. If so, what's the best place? You seem very motivated and determined. I wish you the best of luck in the remainder of this semester.

  22. Hi Taiwei!
I loved reading your introduction and getting to know you. Are you wanting to stay and continue to work here in America after graduating from OU? I also love the Flipped movie! I've seen it dozens of times and always thought it was super cute and a very good coming-of-age book and movie! The picture of the Hot Pot looks amazing! I’ve never had it so I will definitely try it!
